Mike Milligan CFP®

CEO, Financial Planner
Ideas by Mike

I began my “career” at 11 years old, sitting around the dining room table with my grandmother. She would ask me to count her money at the end of each long workday after she picked me up from school. She didn’t have a bank account. So at that young age, I took charge as her “CFO”; looking back, I got my entrepreneurial spirit and reasoning from my Granny.  See, she didn’t start her “Collard Sandwich” business until late in life and out of necessity.  It’s an amazing story!

Essentially, she was my first client—my innovative grandmother with an incredible work ethic, who sold collard sandwiches for a living. (In case you are wondering, my grandmother’s collard sandwiches were made from homemade cornbread stuffed with collard greens, vinegar and spices, then pan-fried. She sold them at lunchtime to local workmen and eventually at festivals in our hometown of Laurinburg, NC.) I guess you can say running a business with unique ways of operating runs in the family.

I believe my financial planning philosophy began with my Granny’s business and through experience has evolved to a modern financial planning firm that wants to make an Impact.  I learned to count every penny, count every nickel, count every dime, count every quarter. And when you add them up at the end of each day, put a purpose to them. You need a purpose in order to plan and care for every dollar that you make.  And with purpose, you can have an Impact.

With over 24 years of experience in helping folks through the world of finances and life as an advisor, friend and coach, I know we all need help. Personally, I’ve received tremendous help in life—from getting in shape and achieving weight loss and fitness goals, to growing a great business. I have also gotten great counsel in how to use my mind to control my choices and decisions.

I am a lifelong learner looking to use my practiced skills to help others just as folks have helped me. I am licensed in life and health insurance. I attained my CFP® (CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™) and Accredited Investment Fiduciary® (AIF®) designations in order to help my clients. I have worked for major banks and small investment firms to learn the ropes before starting my own firm almost a decade ago. Professionally, my goal is to be well known as the trusted advisor who always has every client’s best interest in mind. Personally, my goal is to be a great father to my three children—Zach, Grace and Paige–and husband to my wife, Leigh Ana.  We also have two amazing dogs in Lady Goos and Lady Luna.

Let’s share stories and dreams and help each other reach them.

Getting Wealthy and Being Healthy

There is a clear connection between health and wealth. If you don’t have your health, you won’t enjoy wealth, and of course it won’t last long either. It was at a low point in my life after some personal relationship failures that I decided to reach for a higher level of health in life. Through a decade of poor choices in overeating and lack of working out, I found myself up to 350 pounds. I wasn’t living my best life.

I decided to make a big change. It took me two years to get down to 230 pounds, but I did it. I became a vegetarian and worked out at Orangetheory Fitness in Norfolk five times per week. Along the way, I started achieving more success while enjoying the “little successes”—and the big victories—things along the way.

I decided to add health assessments into the financial planning process and partnered with two companies; Lumiant, the creator of HALO for health assessments in financial planning, and Stevyn Guinnip with Grow WELLthy to provide quarterly webinars to our clients.

I am here to make an Impact; in the folks who help me grow the business who you will meet below, our clients and the community we live in.  How can I impact your life?

Kaitlan Costner

Chief Operating Officer

Hey there! I'm Kaitlan, Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Ideas by Mike, LLC. In my role, I oversee and manage our day-to-day operations, ensuring they align with our strategic goals. I handle all business submissions and processing, nurture relationships with partners, and keep a close eye on our financial performance.

I come equipped with licenses in life, annuity, and health insurance in Virginia, and to top it off, I hold a double major in criminal justice and sociology from the Old Dominion University. Oh, and did I mention I recently bagged my education certification in Financial Planning there too? I'm gearing up for the CFP exam – bring it on!

Originally from charming Norfolk, Virginia, I’m a coastal soul through and through. I share my cozy home with Benny, my adorable rescue dog, and when I’m not ruling the business world, you’ll find me soaking up the sun at the beach, dancing, or getting creative with craft projects, practicing my hand lettering, decorating my house and collecting house plants.

Prior to Ideas by Mike, I worked for 13 years in the Judicial field, working as a courtroom clerk in Circuit Court, as a paralegal to a high profile criminal defense attorney and as a judicial assistant to a U.S District Court Federal Judge. Kelsey Vollmer

Senior Relationship Manger

Hey, I'm Kelsey, the Director of First Impressions at Ideas by Mike, LLC. My job revolves around ensuring that anyone interested in Mike's services feels heard and valued. I handle appointments and make sure everyone gets the information they need about our services. I believe in the personal touch – we're genuine people here, and we want our clients to feel understood and informed about their financial decisions.

I hail from Fairfax, Virginia, right near Washington D.C., and after college, I found my home in Norfolk. I graduated from Old Dominion University with a degree in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Studies, becoming a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist along the way.

Before joining Ideas by Mike, I used to organize programs and activities for residents at an assisted living facility. While I loved my work, the pandemic brought challenges. Now, with Mike, I'm thrilled to keep helping people, albeit in a different capacity.

Smithfield, Virginia is where I hang my hat these days. I'm a beach enthusiast and spend almost every other weekend soaking in the sun on the Hampton Roads beaches. I became a "boat person" after meeting my husband Shawn in 2019. We clicked instantly and after a wonderful two-year engagement, we tied the knot on October 14th, 2023, surrounded by loved ones.

Dogs hold a special place in my heart, right next to Shawn. We have three fur babies: Boone, Norma Jean, and Duke. Boone, our pit bull, was Shawn's rescue . Norma Jean, our French bulldog, is my baby. Duke, a Redbone Coonhound, unexpectedly became a part of our family, and we couldn't resist his charm.

Apart from beach days, boating, and tending to my pups, I love camping. I've been camping since I was a mere 3 months old, and the love for it has stuck with me ever since. It's just another way I cherish life's simple joys.

Liz Mundey

Senior Client Services Manager

My name is Liz and I’m the Senior Relationship Manager here at Ideas by Mike, LLC. My role was designed to give additional support to our clients! I do this by keeping accounts up to date, ensuring information is easy to access and understand, and staying closely connected with our clients to ensure their financial plan stays in alignment with their evolving lives.

I am licensed in general life and insurance and am continuing my education every year in the world of finance. Becoming financially literate and getting to know all of our clients is my favorite part of this job. I truly love what I do, which not everyone can say!

While I was born and raised in Arizona, I spent my twenties traveling the country and it was a blast. When I embarked into my thirties I decided to settle down, get married, and have a baby. Today we have a new puppy (Little Miss Bandita) and our second baby on the way! This is my little piece of the American Dream.

Before working with Mike, I was a National Trainer (4 years), Licensed Massage Therapist (6 years), and a Business Consultant (5 years). The common denominator for all of these jobs is directly impacting people's lives!

Today, I am incredibly grateful to be where I am. Embarking into the financial space has been a gift in my life! I am honored to be part of this team, to be making an impact as a financial office, and to be supporting our clients in a meaningful way.

I look forward to connecting with you!

Marcus Washington

Senior Retirement Specialist

I'm Marcus, and I'm thrilled to be a Retirement Specialist at Ideas By Mike, LLC. I graduated from Abilene Christian University back in 2011 with a Bachelor's of Science, and for several years, I've been deeply involved in the Financial Service Industry. Specifically, my focus has been on helping Federal Employees navigate their retirement plans, particularly the intricate world of FERS and CSRS retirement plans.

At Ideas By Mike, we believe in a personalized approach. It's not about pushing products; it's about understanding your dreams and goals. We don't recommend anything until we've had a good, old-fashioned conversation with you. Your needs, your ambitions – they guide our recommendations. We see our role as painting a picture together, creating a retirement and legacy that's uniquely yours.

Let me share a bit about my journey. I come from humble beginnings, raised in Midland, Texas by my Grandma alongside my three older brothers. Life wasn't always easy – my Grandma faced health challenges, and money was tight. Despite our struggles, we had what we needed, thanks to her determination. Her resilience taught me the value of helping others help themselves. That's why I'm so passionate about what I do; I know firsthand the difference financial guidance can make.

On a more personal note, I'm a proud Texan through and through. I'm a busy dad with three incredible kids – two girls and an energetic boy. Family time is precious to me. Whether it's cheering my son on at his travel sports events, going on family trips, or just hanging out at home, those moments are priceless.

To unwind, I hit the gym, lifting weights, running, and playing basketball a couple of times a week. But when I need to de-stress mentally, I dive into audiobooks, especially self-help ones. I'm all about continuous learning and gaining that slight edge.

When it comes to my work, I'm not here to sell you something for the sake of it. I'm here to promote what you truly need. I can offer guidance, but real progress happens when you're willing to take that advice and make it work for you. I'm here to do right by people and make a positive impact in their lives. Let's chat, and let's create a future that you can look forward to.

Scotty Liberatore

Legacy Specialist

Hello to you! My name is Scotty, and I am honored to be the Legacy Specialist here at Ideas By
Mike, LLC. At this point in my career, I have officially marked 10 years in the Financial Services
industry. What a rewarding and humble journey it has been, and I am so blessed and excited for
many more to come!

For me, life has always been about other people. At an early age I learned the Golden Rule: "treat
others the way you would like to be treated." At that point, my life changed forever.

As a Legacy Specialist, I have a deep understanding of Legacy Planning. My purpose, my
mission, and my goal is to guide individuals and families to create meaningful, lasting impacts
for the future generations. I do this by blending personal insights and strategic planning; ensuring
that assets, values, and cherished memories are preserved in place.
I take pride in building trust and tailoring my approach to align with each client’s unique vision;
helping them create a legacy that resonates. Being able to hear your story, learn what makes you
one of a kind, and plan for your legacy is a true privilege, and I look forward to it!

Growing up in a small, Ohio village, I quickly learned the value of people, hard work, and
money. To me, these three things are left to be talked about later in life, I have also learned this is
not wise to do. My path, like all others; carved out from experiences, wants, needs, goals, sports,
family, friends, and people; have all led me to who I am today.

I am a proud Alumnus of The Ohio State University. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Consumer
and Family Financial Services with a minor in Business Administration and Management. I have
completed all the education requirements to take my Certified Financial Planner designation and
plan to take my certification exam in the future. I hold a current Accident & Health, Casualty,
Life, Property, and Variable license, a current ALHC designation, a prior Series 6, and will soon
hold the ChFC designation. I am a continuous student of the industry and a current member of
The Ohio State University Financial Planning Association.

In my life, I have a wonderful wife Jessica, a supportive family, a great community, and two
dogs: Moose and Champ. We keep an active lifestyle and enjoy the outdoors as much as we can.
Typically, we can be found on a hike with our dogs, a concert or live music event, trying out a
new restaurant, catching a sporting event, hanging out with friends, or even sometimes a relaxing
vacation at Siesta Key Beach.

Personally, I have always loved sports, more specifically playing them, and being involved in
them. I always say I love a friendly competition and will even play you in Tic-Tac-Toe for a good
laugh. I currently spend most of my free time: golfing, fishing, playing softball, writing, creating,
building, playing guitar, and running my handyman business; Scott Of All Trades, LLC.

I wanted to share a snapshot of me, my life, and the legacy that I am protecting.
Please know, I am here to listen, plan, guide, and protect “Your Legacy” with you too.

Barb Gleason

Paraplanner

My name is Barbara Gleason, and I’ve spent the last 25 years as a physical therapist, working in acute care, inpatient rehabilitation, and management. While PT was incredibly rewarding, I felt it was time for a new path. My interest in personal finance grew over the years as I enjoyed reading finance books and helping friends with their taxes, which led me to pursue a career in financial planning.

I completed the Executive Certificate in Financial Planning at Old Dominion University, where I met Mike—and the rest is history! I’m now excited to be part of the team at Ideas by Mike and plan to take the CFP® exam in March 2025.

I’m passionate about helping people, especially those who may feel overwhelmed by financial concepts. I believe everyone deserves to feel confident about their financial future, and I strive to create a comfortable, judgment-free space for clients to ask questions and learn.
